Acupuncture for Dogs and Cats
Acupuncture is a minimally invasive medical procedure that originated in ancient China. With virtually no side effects, it focuses on healing and restoring balance within the body for various physiological benefits. Acupuncture can be used as a form of preventive medicine or as an ongoing treatment for a range of conditions. It involves the precise placement of tiny needles on specific areas of the body where blood vessels and nerve bundles converge, known as "acupoints."
The use of acupuncture is rapidly growing in the field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Kinnunen, who received her certification from Chi University in 2024, is excited to offer this treatment option at Shiloh Veterinary Clinic. Acupuncture can help treat a wide variety of ailments in pets, both young and old.
When is acupuncture recommended?
• Muscle and joint disorders, such as back pain, hind-end weakness, and arthritis
• Gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation
• Side effects associated with cancer treatments
• Skin conditions, such as dermatitis
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
The number of treatments required varies depending on the patient. During your consultation, Dr. Kinnunen will provide recommendations based on your pet's specific needs and desired outcome. Typically, she will suggest between 4 to 8 sessions, depending on your pet’s response to the initial treatments.
Does it hurt my pet?
Acupuncture is performed using small, thin, sterile needles (about the size of a single strand of hair). Most pets hardly notice the needles once they are placed and can relax comfortably under the care of our team during their session.
